In previous versions of the plugin, the live preview might not work if wordpress is installed in the web root's subdirectory (e.g. http://example.com/wordpress instead of http://example.com). The bug preventing live preview from working was fixed since version 4.0 of the plugin. To get clickable smileys you just need to insert <code><?php smilies_clickable() ?></code> in comments.php.
