Digital Wayang

wayangNow everyone can be a digital dalang at home and direct a digital wayang kulit show. A researcher from the Korea National University of Arts created a digital version of the wayang kulit show by allowing the dalang (the puppeteer) to easily control silhouette characters on the screen using their hands without the actual wayang kulit itself. The dalang wears prepared color chips and move their hands inside a small box with curtains just like the stage.

It’s an interesting achievement, but watching a digital show is probably not as good as watching the real thing, in my opinion. I remember having had to wait until way past midnight to watch a wayang show on TV when I was a kid. I may not be the biggest fan of wayang, but I think wayang shows should be shown on TV more often and in better timeslots, replacing all the reality TV shows and all those other crap on Indonesian TV these days.

Fresh Look for Planet Terasi

Since I need to put a new logo for Planet Terasi, I also need to make some adjustments to the look of the website. Hopefully you like the new look. You’re welcome to give feedback by posting your comments to this post.

The logo was created and submitted by Kéré Kêmplu even though the contest had officially ended without any winner. Thanks! He made some remarks in his email (quoted below) regarding the design choices which I think are quite reasonable.

why brown? i think it’s an indonesian color. :) lagian kan miip warna terasi. :D

tipografi dengan huruf ala semprot untuk mewakili dunia blog yang spontan, agak menjauhi kemapanan [ciehhhh], seperti orang bikin pamflet dan plakat.

warna kuning? yeah, pura-puranya matahari tropis gitulah. kalo dikasih biru cyan gak cocok sih.

I hope you enjoy the new look.

A Bit of Update

  • My project is about “context-aware smart homes to support independent living”.
  • I’m very busy with my project, probably until January or February, so I’m not sure if I will have the time and energy to write in this blog during that time, I apologise in advance for lack of updates.
  • Just a clarification if you happen to pick up the October 2005 issue of InfoLINUX, I’m not the founder of linux.or.id, I was just one of the first volunteers who eventually maintain the mailing lists, website, emails, DNS and almost everything else until today. I’m not sure how linux.or.id started, actually, I think it was MDAMT who started it and announced it to the (now defunct) pau-mikro list.
  • Kéré Kêmplu sent me his creation of a logo for Planet Terasi, I’ll put it in Planet Terasi as soon as possible™.
  • Summer is coming soon to Sydney. Barbecues and beaches… and.. what? What project? Oh, right. Never mind.
