Pop up sucks! It is very obtrusive and a flaw in design. People would notice if they are in by, well, redirected to a user page and or maybe the same page with features that unlocked after login. If you redirected the user to the same page *without* any changes is a design flaw from the beginning (if you say that a pop up is the way to tell the user the different).

Btw, are those pages transmitted via SSL/TLS (HTTPS)?

From point number 2: “We would know if the login is successful or not”, yes for tech savvy person like you, it would be easy to know when the link is ready.

By "link is ready" did you mean "page is ready"? So you think the browser should show a popup message everytime a page has finished loading because non tech savvy people might not know when the page has finished loading?

Non-tech people usually means they don't know/care about how the technology works, it doesn't mean that they're stupid.

I think you missed my point.

Being shown the home page after a successful login is an obvious indication that the login was successful. It is a normal, expected behaviour. When something is a normal, expected behaviour, I don't need to be distracted by a message telling me that everything is working as it should be.

Now, when something is out of the ordinary, something that is not normal and not expected, like an unsuccessful login attempt (for whatever reason), *then* I would expect to be told what's happening.

A helpful, intuitive user interface is one that seamlessly blends into the background. The user won't even know it's there. It's just so natural to use.

Some UI designs often fail to seamlessly blend into the background because too often they are distracting. Most of the time, popups and info balloons are distractions. They sometimes unnecessarily steal the user's attention with no good reason. Like distracting me with a message saying that login was successful when directly showing the home page would suffice, and then forcing me to click OK to make the message go away.

If all this is not normal, expected behaviour, then I'd be more than happy to learn some examples of respectable websites or applications with good reputation for UI that can prove me wrong.

Well analyzed - I'll add some :

(1) Several times I have problems login in to that member site, from IndosatM2's own internet connection ! Very, very slow.

Then I switched to another ISP - and I was able to access it quickly.

The mind boggles.

(2) It's quite hard to use from a mobile device (handphone, smartphone, etc)

From point number 2: "We would know if the login is successful or not", yes for tech savvy person like you, it would be easy to know when the link is ready. But then we talk about the greater user, John Doe or Jane Doe, the one who have the privilege for being an ordinary user.

For the other points, I couldn't agree more.

just my 2 cents

well documented investigation :-)

The header image is annoying and the scroll is quite bad idea. Too many click is another bad things.

Websites that can be improved in its usability? Every website (especially for internet banking) that used a lock-in technology and required one type of browser for better access.
